About the Role

Location: USA Remote

Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor

Project Duration: Fixed-Term (Estimated Feb 1, 2026 – Oct 1, 2026)

Project Overview

We are seeking detail-oriented Independent Contractors to support a high-impact project at the intersection of biomedical data and AI model evaluation. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that large volumes of scholarly information are accurate, correctly structured, and reliable. Your expertise will directly support the quality and trustworthiness of advanced technology and global research databases used in real-world applications.

Scope of Work (Deliverables)

As an Independent Contractor, you will manage your own workflow to provide the following high-quality deliverables:

  • Metadata Validation: Review biomedical journal articles and validate structured metadata within specialized data management systems.
  • Funding & Grant Identification: Independently analyze English-language articles to identify and record research funding acknowledgments, including government and private grant identifiers.
  • Technical Linking: Identify and link related citations such as errata, retractions, and dataset DOIs (e.g., GenBank, Dryad, Figshare) to ensure data integrity.
  • Classification: Apply correct status indicators to citations, filtering non-citable items and ensuring compliance with established data standards.
  • Output Milestones: Manage your time and processes to meet a project throughput target of approximately 35 citations per hour while maintaining a high accuracy rate.

Pre-Engagement Requirements (Mandatory)

Due to the nature of the data systems involved, the following security and credentialing steps are mandatory for all contractors:

  • Tier 1 Federal Background Check: Retention is contingent on passing a Tier 1 federal background check for non-sensitive, low-risk data. This requires no felony convictions or pending legal proceedings.
  • Fingerprinting: The process takes approximately 30 days and includes mandatory in-person fingerprinting at an approved local office. The cost of this background check is covered.
  • In-Person Credentialing: Once the background check is approved (expected between Jan 25 and Feb 15, 2026), you will be required to travel in person to Bethesda, Maryland to collect an official work badge from a federal facility. This is a mandatory step for system access; travel requirements should be considered before applying.

Contractor Requirements

  • Expertise: High school diploma required (Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Library Science, or related fields preferred). Previous experience in data entry, metadata review, or structured data validation is expected.
  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to navigate scientific journal articles, XML-formatted citations, and publisher websites independently.
  • Equipment: Contractors must provide their own computer, high-speed internet, and a PIV card reader.
  • Security Clearance: Must be able to pass a government background check to obtain the required security badge and system access.
  • Language: Professional-level English reading comprehension and the ability to work confidently with complex written content.
  • Availability: Ability to meet project milestones during the term of February 1, 2026, through October 1, 2026.

Working Relationship & Environment

  • Autonomy: As a 1099 contractor, you retain control over your work schedule and methods, provided that the project’s quality standards and deadlines are met.
  • System Access: Access to the necessary data management systems is generally available 24/7 to allow for flexible scheduling.
  • Remote Work: This is a 100% remote engagement.
  • Professional Standards: Contractors are expected to adhere to the technical specifications and documentation provided for the project. Periodic quality audits will be conducted to ensure deliverables meet contract requirements.
